ALL census records are regarded as "private" for 72 years from the census date. This is to protect the privacy of living persons who could be on that census.  This means a 72 year lag from the date a census was taken until it is available publicly to researchers.
The 1930 Census was taken on April 1st.  It will be released on April 1st, 2002.

Only Southern States are indexed.  Indexing was started in the south but before it
could be completed, WW II broke out and the labor force was needed elsewhere.

The states indexed are:

Alabama

Florida

Georgia

Louisiana

Mississippi

North Carolina

South Carolina

Tennessee

Virginia

* All other states have not been indexed.
* This will be a definite challenge for genealogy researchers.

The following are new questions asked on this census.

  1. Age of a person at their first marriage.
  2. The amount of their monthly rent or mortgage payment.
  3. If there was a radio in the household.

The standard questions we are used to were changed.

  1. They did not ask for the number of children born.
  2. OR the number of years married.

**The 1940 and 1950 will have NO INDEXES AT ALL!**
