Early Tax Lists of Gordon County, Georgia.
I have begun transcription of these 1850s tax lists. These are transcribed from the originals at the Georgia State Archives. The following are online:
Tax List FAQs The poll tax paid by each male over age 21 is $25. Women did not pay poll tax.
Agents are simply representatives for the named taxable person. No specific relationship is implied. Many times a neighborhood sent one person to pay everyone's taxes and his name appears in several entries. Often a family member is an agent. When women appeared as taxable persons, a male agent usually represented them.
Even though these tax lists are somewhat in alphabetical order, they have a lot of entries which are randomly put in or the person paying tax will be listed under the agents name. If your ancestor resided in Gordon County, I suggest you peruse the entire list. Be sure to look at the list of defaulters listed at the end of each tax list. These will not be in alphabetical order.
Headings on these tax lists. Name Poll ($25 paid by males over age 21 and usually under 60.) Possession ?? Children 1st Quality Land (lists number of acres) 2nd Quality Land (lists number of acres) 3rd Quality (lists number of acres) Pinelands (lists number of acres) No. (I am unsure of what this number means....anybody know?) District # County Value of Land No. of Slaves Value of Slaves Town Property (lists number of acres) Merchandise (dollar amount of merchandise...such as for a store) Money & Debts (cash on hand plus dollar amount of money that is owed to the person) Capital Investment Over 200 Dollars (I am unsure of the meaning of this column....anybody know?) Other Property (dollar amount of value of property other than real estate and merchandise) Whole Property (dollar amount of all amounts added together - the taxable amount.) $200 Off (on this tax list they subtracted $200 (a tax break) of the taxable amount.) Funny thing is, It did not list the amount of tax charged.
*I am not an expert on tax lists. If anyone can help with these headings, it would be most appreciated. If you have any further questions about these tax lists, I have copies of these in my possession and I will try to help. |
