If you haven't been to the Library of Congress online Catalog, it is well worth a visit.  You might find a genealogy has been written on your surname or better yet.......your specific family!  If you find a book there which interests you, the next step is finding a copy of it. 

Many of the books are out of print.

Sometimes the author also donated a copy of the book to an archives, genealogy society or historical society in the area where the family lived.  It might take some digging to find a copy (unless of course, you can go to the Library of Congress) but it might give you some answers.
