Co B, 20th NC Infantry Enlisted 4-18-61 at Cabarrus Co, NC.  Sergeant, age 24, farmer.  Reduced to Private on 3-8-62.  Promoted to Sergeant again on 12-9-62.  Promoted in March 1863 to 1st Sgt.  POW & wounded 7-3-63 at Gettysburg, PA.  Imprisoned at Fort Delaware, DE.  Transferred 10-15-63 to Point Lookout Prison, MD.  Exchanged in May 1864.  POW & wounded 7-20-64 at Winchester, VA.  Lost his left leg due to wounds.  Imprisoned at Camp Chase, OH.  Transferred 3-26-65 to Point Lookout Prison, MD where he took the Oath of Allegiance on 6-3-65 and was released.
